If Families Do Not Know Your School, Every Recruitment Cycle Starts from Zero

Building School-Owned Market Equity 3

Many excellent UK schools remain largely unknown to families in China.
Their history, educational quality and reputation may be well established in the UK. But reputation does not automatically travel across markets.

When families have little prior knowledge of a school, they naturally rely on the reference points available to them: familiar names, rankings, examination results and recommendations from people they already trust. This creates a difficult starting point for schools without established recognition.

A school may still recruit pupils through an agent, an event or a successful campaign. But if families remember the intermediary rather than the school, little has changed in the school’s own market position.

The following recruitment cycle begins with the same challenge: finding another audience, explaining the school again and rebuilding trust from the beginning.
This is why recognition matters. It does not mean becoming widely famous. It means ensuring that the right families:
• Have encountered the school before they begin actively searching
• Recognise its name and educational character
• Understand what distinguishes it from other schools
• Can begin to see whether it may be right for their child

Recognition is built gradually through consistent, market-relevant communication—not only when places need to be filled. Each article, video, conversation and event should leave more families with a clearer understanding of the school than before. Over time, the school no longer enters every recruitment cycle as a complete stranger.

That accumulated recognition becomes an asset the school retains: part of its school-owned market equity.
